    What type of wood is this, and what are you doing in this video? Is this the first step in making spectraply, also have you considered turning Kendamas? There's a whole community of Kendama players that pay a premium for american made hand turned damas.

    Would you recommend this for a beginner? I’ve used a lathe a handful of times, I am dying to get my own lathe. Just want one that I won’t “outgrow” too fast.

    • @ChadSchimmel
      @ChadSchimmel 14 днів тому

      This is an older video and it was a good lathe for me while I had it for sure! My favorite lathe to recommend to folks currently is the Record Power Herald as it has a lot of features that make it good for beginners but also one that you can grow with as you progress in your making, and it is a good price for what you get. I turned on the Herald for several years and then upgraded to their bigger machine but almost everything I turn now could be turned on the Herald. If you are on a budget, a really good way to look for lathes is by joining your local woodturning club as folks are often upgrading and selling their used but perfectly good lathes. (you can also keep your eye on marketplace, craigslist, offer up etc) Watching/reading lots of reviews helps a lot too while you are deciding what lathe is right for you

      @@ChadSchimmel would that be the 16006 that you are referring to for beginner lathes? Thanks for the input, my local wood turning club hasn’t had a sale yet, one coming soon so I am most definitely keeping that in mind as well!

    Looking at this for helpfull tips for ring turning. Instantly seeing someone do the one thing ya shouldn't. xD Don't wear gloves while working with a spinning machine part. Even the thin plastic ones can pull ya hand in... when they get caught.

    Will the zona paper work on wood as well

    • @ChadSchimmel
      @ChadSchimmel Місяць тому

      Generally with wood there is no need to go up to that high of a grit, so with wood I use abranet screen sanding paper as well as Yorkshire grit original, sanding sealer and friction polish. I will also use Zona on hybrids as well. Hope that helps!

    Hey Chad, I got mine from your competitor down in Florida a few years ago, mostly because they were the ONLY place selling these in the US. It is one of the best investments I've made as it has saved me doing yard work. I used to be sick with allergies for 2 days after mowing the lawn, now I just pop on the power cap and away I go. Don't even feel like a dork wearing it in my yard. A request: would you mind making a short video on replacing the felt face gasket? That's a little tricky to get right especially if the old one is deteriorating after years of abuse

    I picked one up finally this past fall, just in time to have it to demonstrate with for The Catskill Mountain Maker Camp. I went all out and got the legs, bench legs, outrigger extension, and the bed extension. I am about 6' tall and the legs and bench legs together keep it at a good height for me. I have been truly impressed everytime I use it. The participates at Maker Camp also commented on the lathe and seemed to be impressed with it as well. I really like how quiet it is and how powerful it is, coming from a JET 1015.

    Hi Chad, have a look at 357 Magdad's site, the stuff he turns is brilliant ! Also by turning the tail stock around, you can get nearly ten inches length on a workpiece. Also by cutting the head off a standard woodscrew you can get a firmer grip on the workpiece. I took out the tailstock centre piece and inserted a small cardboard roll into the bearings which enables me to turn fishing float bodies on a 4 mm wood skewer using balsa wood, cork, and glued up styrofoam blanks. The tools are utter crap, so bin them, and either buy a mini lathe tool set or modify a half decent wood chisel set on the grinder. My turning materials are quite soft so all my turning is done with varying grades of sandpaper. Please dont give up on this brilliant little lathe just yet, just choose your battles carefully ! ✌❤ Bob.
